Techno-Ecologies and Bodies of Memory: the Environment as Battleground
19.10 - 05.10.2025
Above Our Waters, 2025, is the first implementation of the eponymous environmental performance as multimedia installation. By using polyvision as an aesthetic and conceptual tool, the simultaneous projections lead through a journey on and above waters and their ecosystems. The work centers on the waters of the Mediterranean Sea—a body layered with sociopolitical tension, migratory routes, and mythic symbolism. Rhythmic movements of hands, along with fishing nets swinging like prosthetic extensions, blend with textures of natural elements and man-made tools, juxtaposed as elements of the same ecosystem. Across the images, rippled waves and knotted strings melt, accompanied by a deeply mesmeric soundtrack. Documentary footage and fishermen’s words show other adjacent layers. They go through the effects of the climate crisis on marine fauna, the hardship of living out of and depending on the sea, and the awareness that those same waters are routes of hope for other bodies, despite often turning into their graveyards. A light rhythmical turning around in the dark recalls the surveillance of the sea and, in contrast, guidance for the vulnerable ones who traverse it.
